Tax Alert: Beware of Fake Tax Bill Emails from IRS

Recently, there have been a number of reports to the IRS of fraudulent tax notices being sent out as an attachment via email regarding the Affordable Care Act. Fact is, the IRS would never send out a notice like this in an email.

The email contains a fraudulent CP2000 notice, which states that income and/or payment information the IRS has on file doesn’t match the information the taxpayer reported on their tax return. Such an error could cause an increase or decrease in their tax. The notice also includes a payment request that taxpayers mail a check made out to “I.R.S.” to the “Austin Processing Center” at a Post Office Address. This is in addition to the payment link within the e-mail itself. CP2000 notices are only sent out by mail.

If you suspect that you have received one of these communications, please forward this to phishing@irs.gov and delete the email immediately afterwards. Do not click on the attachment.
